Yukon Indigenous Tourism & Culture Impact Assessment

Unify worked alongside a regional Indigenous tourism association and multiple Yukon-based Nations to support a five-phase impact assessment focused on the value of Indigenous tourism.

The work was shaped with local leaders using Indigenous research approaches, ensuring the process reflected community priorities and maintained cultural safety and control. Engagement included workshops, interviews, and regional data collection with Elders, artists, guides, entrepreneurs, and governance leaders.

The assessment focused on understanding how tourism contributes beyond revenue. This included its role in language preservation, land-based learning, youth employment, cultural programming, and community well-being. Unify supported the collection and analysis of this information to build a clear picture of how Indigenous-led tourism operates across the territory and where further support is needed.

The final report is now used as a practical tool for advocacy and planning. It supports funding applications, informs cultural programming, and strengthens discussions with territorial and federal governments. Overall, this work positioned participating Nations and the regional tourism association to advocate for targeted investment and policy alignment, providing a replicable model for how Indigenous tourism can be assessed on its own terms rather than through conventional economic metrics alone.
